The Axarquia Region PDF Print E-mail

Andalucia is located at the very south of the Iberian Península, only 14 kilometres from North Africa at the closest point. The area east of Malaga is known as the Axarquia.

The coastline in the region ranges from pebble and sand beaches to secluded coves and spectacular cliffs around la Herradura. Today, rural tourism comprises a large part of the local economy. However, the area is still breathtakingly beautiful and has not been spoilt by the interest and influx of tourists. The main attractions are the area's dramatic hill and mountain scenery, its unspoilt, white washed villages and the strong sweet wine that is made from sun dried grapes.

The Axarquía is excellent for hiking and several companies now run walking holidays from the UK, centred around Competa. Horse trekking is similarly very popular here. The landscape is riven by deep valleys lined with terraces and irrigation channels that date back to date back to the times of the Romans and Moors

The weather is perhaps the main reason why many people visit or come to live in the Axarquia. Because of the region's sub-tropical climate, this is also a region where some of the more tropical fruits, such as mango and kiwi are grown. The World Health Organisation is on record as naming the area as having one of the best climates in Europe.

The Low and High areas of Andalucia offer many possibilities to the holiday maker and resident alike and should be investigated. With the Sierra Nevada mountains in the north and the beaches in the south Andalucia is a terrific combination of beach resort, a haven for walkers and a ski resort. This results in an area that attracts visitors on a year-round basis. The opportunities are endless.

Communications in the area are excellent with an extensive road and motorway network and Malaga International Airport which is currently being doubled in size.
